Remarkable miracle house in Lahaina survives devastating Maui wildfires and it wasnt because of luck

miracle house in lahaina maui

There are many questions about when residents of the worst-hit parts of Lahaina might be able to come and survey what's left of their community. MAUI, Hawaii — When an inferno tore through Lahaina on the island of Maui, it reduced a historic and charming town to ash and rubble. But the fire left a red-roofed house seemingly untouched by the devastation around it. The owner of a “miracle house” in Lahaina that was spared from the devastating Maui wildfires says he feels uncomfortable with the description when so many of his neighbour’s homes were destroyed. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the main way wildfires ignite homes is with small fires and embers, which are tiny pieces of burning wood or vegetation that float with the wind. And these small fires and embers don’t have to come from the main fire itself.

The Millikins, who started living in Lahaina more than a decade ago, used to bicycle by the house and talk about what it would take to fix the sagging roof, the rotting lanai, the peeling paint. Experts say it was likely a little bit of all the above, but that one element of the home’s recent renovation is actually the most affordable and important thing people can do to try and protect their homes. "The world I knew is gone and will never come back, and my heart is broken." "They're part of our ohana," Millikin said, using the Hawaiian term for family. "And when this is all over, we're going to have them all there to celebrate that house."

The so-called “Miracle House” has entranced the internet, where people are speculating about what could have spared the house. In truth, it’s probably due to a mix of factors, not least of which is luck. Earlier this month, a large, devastating fire in Maui—the second-largest island in Hawaii—caused at least 100 confirmed deaths so far, and left many people missing or injured in the town of Lahaina. The press has called it a “bush fire,” which is a term that refers to fires that burn through a specific kind of often arid landscape that has been stripped of some vegetation by development or industry. That doesn’t sound like the image of Hawaii that most of us conjure in our minds, but the islands have experienced a very hot, dry summer.

A mother raced to save her son from the Maui fires. She couldn't reach him

Multifamily home and commercial properties would need to go through this “major permit” process, which means Maui County might have to hold hundreds of public hearings. First, the Coastal Zone Management Act has been suspended for Lahaina under Gov. Josh Green’s Emergency Proclamation Relating To Wildfires, said Mary Alice Evans, director of the state Office of Planning and Sustainable Development. The office administers Hawaii’s CZMA, which governs much of Lahaina’s burn zone. Shoreline setbacks or a retreat from the water so far aren’t getting much traction under state and county planning efforts.

miracle house in lahaina maui

By intention or not, those changes jibe with wildfire guidance from the Colorado State Forest Service, which stresses the importance of steps such as reducing your home's ability to ignite. The house has roots dating to 1925 — it's believed to have been moved from another location on Maui. After Millikin and his wife bought it in 2021, they finished a restoration project in 2022. The project’s cost is just under $9 million and is being developed and managed by CNHA on land owned by Maui County. Wrap-around services, including financial literacy, will be provided by CNHA’s Kākoʻo Maui Relief & Aid Services Center, according to the announcement. Mayor Bissen gave special thanks to the Homeowners Association, which allowed more than one dwelling on each lot and a five year lease for the project.

The home's owners supposedly installed the river rock to stop the foundation of the house from being affected by the wet runoff that comes with watering traditional landscaping. In addition to special management areas, the coastal zone management statute governs shoreline setbacks. State law requires a setback of at least 40 feet from the shoreline and imposes restrictions, including a public hearing requirement, before most types of construction can happen in the setback zone. Working closely with the county and the local historic commission, they replaced the asphalt roof with heavy-gauge metal — the home would have originally had a roof of either wooden shake or thinner-grade corrugated tin, she said. They lined the ground with stones up to the drip line of the roof, which overhangs by 36 to 40 inches.

A few other aerial photos from Getty and the AP show sparse buildings that withstood the fires spread throughout the town. Millikin told the outlet that when they were doing renovations, they also put it in a commercial-grade steel roof and dug out old landscaping to replace it with river stones about a meter around the house. The latter is what likely made the biggest difference in the house's ability to withstand the flames, Michael Wara, director of the Climate and Energy Policy Program at the Stanford Wood Institute for the Environment, told Civil Beat. In the case of the miracle house, recent renovations made by the home’s owners likely played a role, according to reporting from Honolulu Civil Beat, a local nonprofit news organization.

'Miracle house' owner hopes it will serve as a base for rebuilding Lahaina

Millikin has spent much of the last week — in between anxious calls to check up on friends and neighbors — puzzling over why his house was somehow spared. The list also includes Harry, he said, who by virtue of his work on the house's roof has the right to park at the house and go surfing any time he wants to. She said as the family looks ahead, the plan is to eventually return to Lahaina when the time is right. “There was a lot of times where we had to think about whether or not we were going to leave the island and not be home anymore, because we didn’t know what was going to happen. We didn’t know when we had to leave the hotels,” she said, noting in one move, they were given just 24 hours notice.

New Maui shoreline setback rules were adopted by the Maui Planning Commission in November but have not been signed by the mayor. Those establish a shoreline setback of as much as 200 feet in some instances. But it’s not clear when or if Mayor Richard Bissen will sign those into law. There’s the potential application of historic preservation and environmental review laws to some projects, which could trigger the need for archaeological studies and environmental assessments or environmental impact statements, Abbott said.

This home, overseen by a Native Hawaiian carpenter who headed most construction projects for the Pioneer Mill Co., was built from California redwood, Millikin said, which has some natural fire-resistant properties. But so was the historic house next door, which burned completely in the Aug. 8 fire. Before fires ripped through Lahaina, the craftsman-inspired home at 271 Front St. didn’t stand out much in the neighborhood.

LAHAINA, Hawaii — On a section of Front Street in the town of Lahaina, every structure has been charred and replaced with squares of ash – except one. Right along the sea wall lies a single house with a red roof, green porch and a seemingly unharmed vehicle in a largely unscathed driveway. They removed the asphalt roof and installed a heavy-gauge metal one with an air pocket that allowed heat to escape. Photographs of Trip Milliken and Dora Atwater Millikin’s unscathed red-roofed home went viral as a rare beacon of hope after the destructive fires that wiped out much of Lahaina and left at least 115 dead. The NFPA says the most important areas to fireproof to protect your home are the home itself and the immediate five feet around it. You should keep the immediate five feet around your home a “non-combustible zone” by removing any flammable materials from it.

Many people live in homes where they don’t care for their lawns because they’re renters. It’s hard to keep track of local precipitation to find out when you should supplement with sprinklers. And people may buy homes with lawns they simply don’t know the details about. In the morning, a friend called and sent them a picture from a helicopter flyover of Lahaina. But there, in the midst of the destruction, was the seemingly untouched red roof of Millikin’s home.

After the renovation, the house was nominated to join the National Registry of Historical places. Identified as the Pioneer Mill Company/Lahaina Ice Company Bookkeeper's House, the dwelling was used by bookkeepers of a company that did everything from delivering ice and soda water to selling electric power to the town of Lahaina. Photos of the wooden house, standing intact while its neighbors were reduced to ashes, quickly became an online fascination. Millikin was in Massachusetts when the Aug. 8 fire broke out in Lahaina. But the next day, he received a picture – in the middle of dozens of piles of ash stood his home, largely untouched. Suddenly, he had what some are dubbing on social media as a "miracle house," often seen in the aftermath of fires in places like California.

She recalled when Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) speculated that the 2018 Camp fire, which killed 85 people when it destroyed the California town of Paradise, might have been started by a laser beam in space. In this case, a regular asphalt composition roof would likely have done just as good a job as metal, as most have a Class A fire resistance rating, she added. The company prides itself on using the smallest footprint solution for a particular problem, including adjusting irrigation in response to weather.

The homeowners purchased the house, which is believed to be nearly 100 years old, in 2021, and began a two-year renovation project in line with a historic preservation plan. The modular homes are each just under 600 square feet with two bedrooms. To apply, residents must be verified as impacted by the Maui wildfires. Monthly rent is set at $2,500 and will include water, sewer, and trash collection. Minimum occupancy per unit is two people, with maximum occupancy set at five people per unit. According to Popular Mechanics, the so-called "miracle house" was primarily protected by its three-foot-wide stretch of river rock that surrounds the building.

The devastating wildfires burned down over 2,200 buildings in the town of Lahaina, and questions have been raised over whether Hawaiian Electric - the island's main power supplier - was warned about the potential fires before they erupted. In places where wildfires are historically frequent, many trees have adapted to resist or even rely on wildfires. Regular large wildfires weren’t common in the Hawaiian islands until recently, and so in general the islands’ native plants aren’t equipped to deal with regular fires, the Hawaii Division of Forestry and Wildlife says.

She has additional bylines with Essence and Forbes Vetted. As mysterious as they are intriguing, gang-related tattoos have aroused interest and curiosity for decades. There's such a great energy to the city, it's hard not to be motivated. Creative people here just do their thing, like they can't help but do it. I would have loved to be a professional athlete of some sort.

In some cultures, honey is even considered to be a sacred substance. Therefore, a honey bee tattoo can also represent nourishment and healing. Bees are pretty misunderstood just like spiders or any other insect on the planet. Bees are pretty important for the reproduction and nurturing of the trees, plants, and crops that are important for human survival. Without the bees, we wouldn’t probably have coffee or chocolate!

It’s easy to believe that the queen bee doesn’t do anything and that the other bees have to care for everything. Everything in the beehive, on the other hand, is under the supervision of the queen bee. She supervises and controls everything and guides and supports her fellow bees so that they may continue to care for one another. A bee tattoo may also serve as a sign of family and togetherness. These teeny-tiny animals band together and communicate with one another using a special language that they have developed. As a result, a bee tattoo is appropriate for anybody concerned about their family. The tattoo with the bee on it also represents perseverance and sacrifice on one’s part.

This tattoo’s significance is amplified even more by the presence of many bees, giving the impression of the tattoo being more complete. This tattoo requires a skilled tattoo artist who can design, align, and construct these bees to perfection to get the greatest results. You may choose to have equal-sized bees or one that is larger or smaller than the rest. For example, the sunflower is a symbol of love and romance and hope and eternal affection. Your tattoo artist can aid you in learning the symbolic significance of various flowers and select the most appropriate kind for your bee and flower tattoo. In the 1930s, the traditional tattoo style began to develop.

Warwick’s version feels rushed, but this is a song that needs space to maximize its drama. His version is seven minutes long — probably not an option for Warwick in 1964 — and it crawls.

The song explores the difference between a mere physical structure and the home that is created through love and emotional connection. It emphasizes that a house is merely a shell, while a home is a place filled with cherished memories, warmth, and a sense of belonging. Vandross beautifully captures this sentiment through his heartfelt delivery, making the song relatable to anyone who has experienced the longing for a true home.

Warwick’s rendition was weighed down by the pop-opera scoring that often graced Bacharach and David songs in the Sixties. In this case, that’s a detriment; sometimes it sounds like Warwick is fighting to be heard above the strings and brass. In contrast, Vandross’ imperious pleading never disappears beneath the orchestra. However, Vandross holds on to hope and pleads for his loved one to have a change of heart. He acknowledges that he is not meant to live alone and desperately wants to turn the house into a home again.

The title, “A House Is Not a Home,” encapsulates the central theme of the song. It highlights the idea that a house, a physical structure, is incomplete without the love and warmth that transforms it into a home. The title acts as a poignant reminder of the intangible qualities that make a place truly special. Luther Vandross was facing a formidable crowd when he took the stage to perform “A House Is Not a Home” at the 1986 NAACP Image Awards. Janet Jackson was there, already a superstar thanks to her recently released Control, as was Anita Baker, a high-flying vocalist whose new Rapture album was well on its way to 5 million copies sold.

Grand Princess Cruise Ship Review First-hand Expert Review

Search for the Big Five — grizzly bears, Dall sheep, wolves, caribou and moose — while on a bus tour in the park. Most Princess Alaska cruisetours include a tour into Denali National Park. Sailing past them is a sensory experience that inspires both the mind and heart. Watch as Hubbard Glacier calves into the water and listen for the rumble of “white thunder” that it leaves in its path. Land by helicopter on top of Mendenhall Glacier, and feel its strong roots beneath you. Or navigate its rugged terrain by way of flightseeing or dogsled with our Alaska shore excursions.

Alaska Cruise Ports of Call

Enjoy the added benefit of a view of the ocean from either a picture window or porthole that brings in natural light. All three venues share the same menu for dinner, but it changes daily. Starters generally include small fruit plates, salads and soups like French onion or frozen rum-infused pina colada soup (served in a glass with a straw). Mains consist of items like pan-seared basa with pineapple-papaya salsa, grilled beef tenderloin, Asian-spiced duck breast and tempura vegetables. Always-available entrees include shrimp cocktail, Caesar salad, fettuccine Alfredo, grilled salmon, pan-seared chicken breast and hamburgers.

A one-way, 7-day Alaska glacier cruise between Vancouver, B.C. and Anchorage (Whittier)

I felt comfortable letting my daughter roam the ship on her own (mostly back and forth to the kids’ club) since I knew I could pinpoint her location at any time. I was looking forward to our day in Juneau because we booked an excursion to visit Dog Sled Summer Camp. We chose this activity because my daughter studied the Iditarod (a yearly long-distance dogsled race in Alaska) in school last year and this was an opportunity to bring all of that to life. Our cruise left out of Whittier, which is about an 80-minute drive from Anchorage. We booked a private transfer to pick us up at the hotel and drop us off at the cruise terminal.

The International Cafe had specialty coffees for an extra charge, so instead I ordered coffee through room service (which was included in the cruise price) each morning. Canada's third largest city feels like a North American metropolis mixed with a small European town. — Stanley Park — and visit the continent's second largest Chinatown during your Alaska cruise vacation. Soar above the city's lush natural environment in a sky gondola for panoramic views, or get up close to the local sea life at the Vancouver Aquarium. On the dining room menu, cruisers will find plenty of dishes that draw inspiration from the local cuisine of the places the ship visits.

Attend a lumberjack axe-throwing competition, watch a Native dance performance and excite your taste buds at a salmon bake with locals. Or watch a craftsmen thoughtfully carve totem poles at a Native Alaskan village. The ship has world class dining options, including some from Michelin-star chefs, all the way to casual eats such as the Salty Dog Gastropub.

While cruising through the 30-mile waterway of Endicott Arm Fjord, get up close to Dawes Glacier and hear it roar with white thunder. Sail past waterfalls and granite canyon walls that disappear into the fjords. Travel along the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway, or aboard a riverboat sternwheeler for sweeping views of Alaska’s greatest treasures.

I recently returned from an Alaska cruise with my family where we sailed the Inside Passage from Anchorage, Alaska, (via Whittier, Alaska) to Vancouver, Canada. When you’re not quite ready to call it a night, check out one of the ship’s best late night spots, The One5. Recorded DJ music gets you up on the dance floor and the inviting décor lends itself to a little relaxation with a cocktail and conversation. And when the music begins to wind down, night owls can still linger at the bar. Drink, dance, and keep the party going into the wee hours at The One5, your after-hours dance club.

Open 24-hours a day, the International Café located in the Piazza is the place for an ever-changing array of small bite meals, treats and gourmet beverages. Grab a freshly baked croissant to start your day, snack on pies and quiche or choose from a wide variety of salads and sandwiches at lunchtime, and indulge in decadent desserts in the evening. Coffee and tea fans will love the New Grounds Crafted Coffee menu featuring a variety of specialty espresso-based drinks made from a custom blend of coffee beans, as well as iced tea fusions.

Princess Alaska Cruises Cruise, 7 Nights From Vancouver, Grand Princess, September 11, 2024

grand princess alaska cruise

If you’re cruising with family, it’s worth it to book adjacent rooms with connecting balconies. Our mini-suite had tons of storage space and a full-sized shower/tub in the bathroom (which you know is a big deal if you’ve ever experienced a typical tiny cruise ship shower). For this Alaska cruise, I booked a mini-suite with a balcony (stateroom D210, to be exact).

One of the ship’s coolest hangouts

Then we did a day trip to nearby Grouse Mountain and the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. Hyatt Regency Vancouver is now a Category 4 hotel requiring 12,000 (off-peak), 15,000 (standard), or 18,000 (peak) World of Hyatt points per night. There are plenty of spots to watch this phenomenon along Ketchikan Creek and there’s even a salmon ladder, which helps the fish get to their destination. The scenery was definitely beautiful, but the glaciers themselves weren’t what I was expecting. On top of the incredible value I got by using my free night certificate, the staff at Hyatt Place Anchorage-Midtown were wonderful and they had one of the best Hyatt Place breakfasts I have ever had.

Why Book Excursions with Princess?

The line has introduced its Wild for Alaska Seafood menu on Grand Princess' Alaska sailings, making it possible for guests to order Alaska seafood dishes every night in the main dining room. Think spiked coffee and hot-chocolate offerings; Alaska beer tastings; cocktail flights made from Alaska-distilled spirits. Setting sail on the Grand Princess opens up a world of captivating destinations if it’s your first time on a cruise ship. In this Grand Princess review, you’ll discover its public areas and why cruising on this Grand-class vessel may be suited to you.

Get in the game with a variety of activities

There were 3 separate areas that were divided by age group — The Treehouse was for ages 3 to 7, The Lodge was for ages 8 to 12, and The Beach House was for kids ages 13 to 17. When you’re going on a cruise with kids, having a kids’ club is invaluable. The art auctions on this cruise were run by Park West Gallery, as they are on just about any cruise ship you’ll find. Unfortunately, the art staff on board was unorganized and 1 member was downright pushy and rude. We were traveling with family so we booked 3 rooms next to each other with connecting balconies. Our stateroom attendant opened up the doors between our balconies so we could move freely between them.

There were some highlights (the pastries at the International Cafe were fantastic), but not much stood out otherwise. My first 3 cruises ever were on Princess and I remember the food being excellent. Don’t get me wrong — there were a few things that were fantastic, but overall it wasn’t as good as I had remembered. Let’s get to some details about my experience with Grand Princess on a 7-night Alaska cruise. We walked through downtown Ketchikan and over to historic Creek Street.

I had visions in my head that didn’t quite jive with reality, so I was underwhelmed by the experience.
