Luther Vandross Stuns Dionne Warwick With 'A House Is Not a Home'

Through Vandross’ heartfelt delivery, the song becomes an anthem for anyone longing for love and connection. "A House Is Not a Home" is a 1964 ballad written by the team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David for the 1964 film of the same name, starring Shelley Winters and Robert Taylor. Another version of the song, by Brook Benton, which was the version that appeared in the film, was released at nearly the same time.

The song explores the difference between a mere physical structure and the home that is created through love and emotional connection. It emphasizes that a house is merely a shell, while a home is a place filled with cherished memories, warmth, and a sense of belonging. Vandross beautifully captures this sentiment through his heartfelt delivery, making the song relatable to anyone who has experienced the longing for a true home.

The Meaning Behind The Song: A House Is Not a Home by Luther Vandross

His performance of the song at the 1988 NAACP Awards telecast would bring Warwick to tears. A House Is Not a Home captures the essence of love and the emptiness that can exist within the confines of a physical space. Luther Vandross sings about how a house, or any physical object, loses its meaning when there is no one to share it with. He compares a chair to a house, emphasizing that even though a chair may still be functional without someone sitting in it, it lacks the warmth and comfort that comes from having someone there.

Warwick’s rendition was weighed down by the pop-opera scoring that often graced Bacharach and David songs in the Sixties. In this case, that’s a detriment; sometimes it sounds like Warwick is fighting to be heard above the strings and brass. In contrast, Vandross’ imperious pleading never disappears beneath the orchestra. However, Vandross holds on to hope and pleads for his loved one to have a change of heart. He acknowledges that he is not meant to live alone and desperately wants to turn the house into a home again.

Vandross ends the song with one final show of power, rising from the bottom of the scale through the full extent of his range on the word “me.” The camera cuts to Warwick, who appears to be concealing a tear. Vandross's version was sampled by Kanye West for "Slow Jamz", from Twista's 2004 album Kamikaze, as well as Kanye's own 2004 studio album The College Dropout. Vandross’ rich and soulful vocals add a sense of vulnerability and longing, making the lyrics resonate even more powerfully with listeners. His interpretation of the song becomes a personal journey, filled with raw emotion and heartfelt delivery.

A House Is Not a Home Lyrics

In conclusion, A House Is Not a Home by Luther Vandross is a song that speaks to the fundamental human need for love and companionship. It reminds us that a physical space is meaningless without the presence of loved ones to turn it into a home. The lyrics and emotions conveyed in this song resonate deeply with listeners, making it a timeless and unforgettable piece of music. Luther Vandross’ version of “A House Is Not a Home” is revered for his exceptional vocal performance, his emotional connection to the lyrics, and his ability to captivate listeners with his soulful delivery.

Conversations happening in Los Angeles

The song was originally written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for the musical Promises, Promises in 1968. Vandross’ remake of “A House Is Not a Home” was so thorough that nearly every singer of note who subsequently tackled the song — Ron Isley, Jaheim, Ne-Yo — has attempted to match his version. Vandross died in 2005, and a tribute album dedicated to him was released two months after. The Warwick single was performed in the key of F major, and it is most often played in that key in jazz interpretations.

The song’s enduring popularity can be attributed to its timeless lyrics, emotionally charged melody, and Luther Vandross’ exceptional vocal performance. Its universal theme of longing for a true home resonates with listeners from all walks of life, making it a timeless classic in the world of soulful ballads. It’s no wonder that this song has been sampled and covered by various artists, as it captures a universal feeling that many can relate to. Whether it’s the soulful vocals, the heart-wrenching lyrics, or the emotional resonance it carries, A House Is Not a Home remains a timeless classic.

Notable renditions include those by Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, and Stevie Wonder, among others. Each artist adds their own unique interpretation to the song, showcasing its enduring popularity and universal appeal. Vandross, a vocal fan of Warwick who collaborated with her during the Eighties, first released his cover of “A House Is Not a Home” in 1981. Warwick’s version feels rushed, but this is a song that needs space to maximize its drama. His version is seven minutes long — probably not an option for Warwick in 1964 — and it crawls.

Yes, Luther Vandross frequently performed “A House Is Not a Home” during his live concerts. Each live performance was a testament to Vandross’ incredible vocal talent, and the song often became a highlight of his shows. His live performances showcased his ability to captivate audiences and evoke strong emotions through his singing. The song appears on Luther Vandross’ album titled “Never Too Much,” which was released in 1981. It became one of the standout tracks on the album and helped solidify Vandross’ career as a successful solo artist.

The refrain of the song introduces a melancholic element, as Vandross sings about calling the name of his loved one, only to realize that it is just a “crazy game” and it ends in tears. This reflects the pain of longing for someone who is no longer there, and the disappointment that comes with the realization that they are gone. Now that we have the basic information about the song, let’s dive into its meaning and explore how it resonates with listeners.

He hopes that when he climbs the stairs and turns the key, his loved one will be there, confessing their love for him. In the lyrics, Vandross expresses the longing for companionship and connection. Yes, Luther Vandross’ version of “A House Is Not a Home” was a commercial success. It peaked at number five on the Billboard R&B Singles chart, solidifying Vandross’ status as a rising star. The song’s popularity also helped propel the album “Never Too Much” to great success, further establishing Vandross as a prominent force in the music industry. Aside from Luther Vandross’ version, “A House Is Not a Home” has been covered by numerous artists over the years.

On stage in 1986, it’s remarkable the way Vandross is able to change the structure of a familiar song. He’s such an adept singer he can insert wildly long ad-libs — “goodnight” becomes “goodnight, good morning, good afternoon, hello, bye-bye baby, yeah yeah yeah” — and still find his way back to the beat. His voice is flexible enough to splinter a single “no” into six or eight parts and transform “love” into a colorful spray of falsetto.

Luther Vandross was known for his ability to convey emotion through his soulful singing. The heartfelt lyrics and melancholic melody of “A House Is Not a Home” appealed to Vandross’ own personal experiences and resonated with him on a deeply emotional level. The song was recorded by R&B/soul singer-songwriter Luther Vandross on his 1981 debut album Never Too Much. The track, which was recorded at seven minutes long, was released as a single and became an R&B hit, and later one of Vandross's signature songs.

Vandross’ rendition has become the definitive version of the song for many, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of fans worldwide. The song has resonated with people from all walks of life, striking a chord with those who have experienced the longing for a true home. Its poignant lyrics and Luther Vandross’ soulful delivery have touched the hearts of many, making it a beloved and cherished song for generations. A House Is Not a Home is not only a beautiful song musically, but it also holds a powerful message about the importance of love, companionship, and creating a sense of home.

Grand Princess Cruise Ship Review First-hand Expert Review

grand princess alaska cruise

Search for the Big Five — grizzly bears, Dall sheep, wolves, caribou and moose — while on a bus tour in the park. Most Princess Alaska cruisetours include a tour into Denali National Park. Sailing past them is a sensory experience that inspires both the mind and heart. Watch as Hubbard Glacier calves into the water and listen for the rumble of “white thunder” that it leaves in its path. Land by helicopter on top of Mendenhall Glacier, and feel its strong roots beneath you. Or navigate its rugged terrain by way of flightseeing or dogsled with our Alaska shore excursions.

Alaska Cruise Ports of Call

Enjoy the added benefit of a view of the ocean from either a picture window or porthole that brings in natural light. All three venues share the same menu for dinner, but it changes daily. Starters generally include small fruit plates, salads and soups like French onion or frozen rum-infused pina colada soup (served in a glass with a straw). Mains consist of items like pan-seared basa with pineapple-papaya salsa, grilled beef tenderloin, Asian-spiced duck breast and tempura vegetables. Always-available entrees include shrimp cocktail, Caesar salad, fettuccine Alfredo, grilled salmon, pan-seared chicken breast and hamburgers.

A one-way, 7-day Alaska glacier cruise between Vancouver, B.C. and Anchorage (Whittier)

I felt comfortable letting my daughter roam the ship on her own (mostly back and forth to the kids’ club) since I knew I could pinpoint her location at any time. I was looking forward to our day in Juneau because we booked an excursion to visit Dog Sled Summer Camp. We chose this activity because my daughter studied the Iditarod (a yearly long-distance dogsled race in Alaska) in school last year and this was an opportunity to bring all of that to life. Our cruise left out of Whittier, which is about an 80-minute drive from Anchorage. We booked a private transfer to pick us up at the hotel and drop us off at the cruise terminal.

No one does seafood quite like Alaska—which is why we brought the best of the Great Land on board, so you can experience it all with Princess. This 30-mile waterway is surrounded by cliffs, valleys and dozens of waterfalls. Icebergs and harbor seals decorate the water below while Dawes Glacier soars into the sky above. Revel in the beauty of Mother Nature’s masterpiece and listen closely as the scenery whispers secrets of times long ago during your cruise to Alaska.

Once again, the Ruby Princess will sail out of San Francisco, California, on two different 10 itineraries, which include ports of call such as Juneau, Skagway,  Ketchikan,  Alaska, and Victoria, British Columbia. Royal Princess has a bevy of dining venues, a lively piazza, plenty of shows and entertainment, and activity to keep busy when not in port. It has a glass paneled SeaWalk that stretches 28 feet off the ship’s edge and an impressive spa. The ship will sail from April to September on five different itineraries with prices as low as $644 per person in April.

How To Book This Cruise

Roving street performers, quaint boutiques, a spiral staircase and several glass-walled lifts provide panoramic views. Visit the International Café for gourmet coffees, or marvel at the wine selection at Vines, voted one of the “Best Wine Bars at Sea,” by USA Today. In addition, these staterooms include a roll-in shower equipped with grab bars and a fold-down bench seat, an easy access closet and accessible writing desk. The International Cafe had specialty coffees for an extra charge, so instead I ordered coffee through room service (which was included in the cruise price) each morning. Canada's third largest city feels like a North American metropolis mixed with a small European town. — Stanley Park — and visit the continent's second largest Chinatown during your Alaska cruise vacation. Soar above the city's lush natural environment in a sky gondola for panoramic views, or get up close to the local sea life at the Vancouver Aquarium. On the dining room menu, cruisers will find plenty of dishes that draw inspiration from the local cuisine of the places the ship visits.

Attend a lumberjack axe-throwing competition, watch a Native dance performance and excite your taste buds at a salmon bake with locals. Or watch a craftsmen thoughtfully carve totem poles at a Native Alaskan village. The ship has world class dining options, including some from Michelin-star chefs, all the way to casual eats such as the Salty Dog Gastropub.

While cruising through the 30-mile waterway of Endicott Arm Fjord, get up close to Dawes Glacier and hear it roar with white thunder. Sail past waterfalls and granite canyon walls that disappear into the fjords. There’s a world of sights to be seen in the Great Land and our Alaska cruise excursions give you a front-row seat to it all. Bring history books to life when you tour Skagway, the former gateway to the gold rush, and visit Gold Dredge 8 in Fairbanks to learn even more about mining. Travel along the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway, or aboard a riverboat sternwheeler for sweeping views of Alaska’s greatest treasures.

I recently returned from an Alaska cruise with my family where we sailed the Inside Passage from Anchorage, Alaska, (via Whittier, Alaska) to Vancouver, Canada. When you’re not quite ready to call it a night, check out one of the ship’s best late night spots, The One5. Recorded DJ music gets you up on the dance floor and the inviting décor lends itself to a little relaxation with a cocktail and conversation. And when the music begins to wind down, night owls can still linger at the bar. Drink, dance, and keep the party going into the wee hours at The One5, your after-hours dance club.

There is a wide selection of staterooms accommodating up to four guests, and you’ll enjoy substantial savings on your third and fourth guests. There are also connecting stateroom options, as well as Two Bedroom Family Suites, with room for up to eight guests, which offer more living space, a balcony and two bathrooms, including a full bath tub. Open 24-hours a day, the International Café located in the Piazza is the place for an ever-changing array of small bite meals, treats and gourmet beverages. Grab a freshly baked croissant to start your day, snack on pies and quiche or choose from a wide variety of salads and sandwiches at lunchtime, and indulge in decadent desserts in the evening. Coffee and tea fans will love the New Grounds Crafted Coffee menu featuring a variety of specialty espresso-based drinks made from a custom blend of coffee beans, as well as iced tea fusions.

Princess Alaska Cruises Cruise, 7 Nights From Vancouver, Grand Princess, September 11, 2024

grand princess alaska cruise

If you’re cruising with family, it’s worth it to book adjacent rooms with connecting balconies. Our mini-suite had tons of storage space and a full-sized shower/tub in the bathroom (which you know is a big deal if you’ve ever experienced a typical tiny cruise ship shower). For this Alaska cruise, I booked a mini-suite with a balcony (stateroom D210, to be exact).

One of the ship’s coolest hangouts

Then we did a day trip to nearby Grouse Mountain and the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. Hyatt Regency Vancouver is now a Category 4 hotel requiring 12,000 (off-peak), 15,000 (standard), or 18,000 (peak) World of Hyatt points per night. There are plenty of spots to watch this phenomenon along Ketchikan Creek and there’s even a salmon ladder, which helps the fish get to their destination. The scenery was definitely beautiful, but the glaciers themselves weren’t what I was expecting. On top of the incredible value I got by using my free night certificate, the staff at Hyatt Place Anchorage-Midtown were wonderful and they had one of the best Hyatt Place breakfasts I have ever had.

Why Book Excursions with Princess?

The line has introduced its Wild for Alaska Seafood menu on Grand Princess' Alaska sailings, making it possible for guests to order Alaska seafood dishes every night in the main dining room. Think spiked coffee and hot-chocolate offerings; Alaska beer tastings; cocktail flights made from Alaska-distilled spirits. Setting sail on the Grand Princess opens up a world of captivating destinations if it’s your first time on a cruise ship. In this Grand Princess review, you’ll discover its public areas and why cruising on this Grand-class vessel may be suited to you.

Get in the game with a variety of activities

There were 3 separate areas that were divided by age group — The Treehouse was for ages 3 to 7, The Lodge was for ages 8 to 12, and The Beach House was for kids ages 13 to 17. When you’re going on a cruise with kids, having a kids’ club is invaluable. The art auctions on this cruise were run by Park West Gallery, as they are on just about any cruise ship you’ll find. Unfortunately, the art staff on board was unorganized and 1 member was downright pushy and rude. We were traveling with family so we booked 3 rooms next to each other with connecting balconies. Our stateroom attendant opened up the doors between our balconies so we could move freely between them.

There were some highlights (the pastries at the International Cafe were fantastic), but not much stood out otherwise. My first 3 cruises ever were on Princess and I remember the food being excellent. Don’t get me wrong — there were a few things that were fantastic, but overall it wasn’t as good as I had remembered. Let’s get to some details about my experience with Grand Princess on a 7-night Alaska cruise. We walked through downtown Ketchikan and over to historic Creek Street.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say the whole trip was a disappointment. I really enjoyed traveling to a new area (this was my first time in Alaska) and spending time with my family. There were some aspects of my Alaska cruise (the scenic cruising days and the ship’s food and entertainment, in particular) that left me feeling let down.

The food was beyond amazing and a place I could have enjoyed for more than one night. On the Lido deck, Prego Pizzeria offers a grab-and-go pizza by the slice. Alfredo’s Pizzeria offers a sit-down experience, where thin-crust pizzas are made-to-order. It costs USD 14.99 to eat here, but waived if you have Princess Plus or Premier packages.

The Mermaid’s Tail Bar, situated by the pool, serves refreshing tropical concoctions and ice-cold beers, perfect if you need respite from the sun-drenched deck. Princess ships also offered afternoon tea, which was complimentary. Attend at least one tea ritual if you’re a fan of finger sandwiches, scones, and tasty treats.

This service is beneficial if you’re booked on an extended itinerary or sailing to Alaska, where you need clothing for three seasons.

I always found this frustrating, as you must go up or down one deck to gain access. Alternatively, you can choose anytime dining where you can eat anywhere, at any time. Interestingly, the Crown Princess dining rooms share the same name. With the exception of deck 14, you can find a self-serve launderette on every deck with staterooms. Most decks have the laundry room near the aft, except for deck 5, which is positioned near the bow, opposite cabin P208. Being an older vessel, the Grand Princess doesn’t have lavish multi-bedroom suites.

Rush across the snow on a dog sled with a professional musher, fly fish for salmon in fresh rivers and soar over miles of glacial tundra in a helicopter. Watch migrating humpback whales from the deck of a catamaran or Native craftsman carve a traditional totem pole, and expand your Alaska cruise experience. Travel the Inside Passage on 10 or 11-day Alaska cruises from San Francisco and allow the natural landscapes to inspire your day’s adventures. Begin by sailing beneath the Golden Gate Bridge and along the Pacific Coast.

One of the most important Alaska cruise tips I can offer is to manage your expectations. Weather can be a factor that may cause you to miss a scenic cruising day entirely. I was really looking forward to these scenic cruising days to get up close to some glaciers. However, in my opinion, I found the glaciers in the Alaskan summer to be disappointing. I had visions in my head that didn’t quite jive with reality, so I was underwhelmed by the experience.
